Birding tour Punt van Reide and Dollard, in Groningen the Netherlands

Country of the Harrier

At the very tip of Groningen, against Germany, there is a vast bird area unknown to many people. In this area, the Gray Harrier breeds in the spring and the Hen Harrier brings the winter through. In addition, the Marsh Harrier is also a permanent resident in this still quiet landscape. It is now almost impossible to imagine, but this area in Groningen, called the Oldambt, used to be the granary of the Netherlands and a large part of Europe! The area is adjacent to the Dollard. Here the river empties the Ems, to seek connection in the Wadden Sea.

Dollard and salt marshes

Outside the dike along the Dollard are the extensive salt marshes. Here the country is high enough, so that it does not get any more under every flood. Only at very high water does the seawater end up on the salt marshes. Due to the lower salt content, a flora is created here. These extensive salt marshes form a natural nesting and rest area for birds, now of international alure. In the middle of these salt marshes there is a special bird watch tower: the Kiekkaaste. This birdhouse outside the dike is unique in the Netherlands with a unique view of the mudflats and the salt marshes. To get there we have to cross a plank path through the reed fields. Firm waterproof footwear is a must! Bluethroat and bearded man can sing along on the way. From the Kiekkaaste, depending on the tide, many waders and / or species of ducks can be seen. And with a bit of luck, a red kite will fly over.

Carel Coenraadpolder

Between Nieuwstatenzijl and the Punt van Reide there are several polders outside the dike. From the dike a great view of the Carel Coenraadpolder is possible. Here birds of prey are regularly seen, as peregrine falcon, buzzard or rough-legged buzzard.

Punt van Reide

The Point of Reide is a remnant of an old moraine of the Ems. A peninsula was created in the Dollard due to the exit. The rest of the area has been lost in the past centuries and disappeared into the sea. Over the years a beautiful nature area has been created here, in which in 2015 a breeding island was constructed. This breeding ground is used by, among others, avocet, plover plover, northern tern, common tern and black-headed gull. A walk will be made in the nature reserve, and we will visit a bird watching hut. Ducks and waders are predominant here. The Punt van Reide is also known for the amount of seals that can be seen (from behind a viewing wall) in the spring and summer.
