What is the Corona Cap?
“The reality of the Corona era in which we live came through Andrea’s careful preparation. For example, there was a special cap for the telescope that was specially made by Birds4you with a 3D printer. All necessary hygiene measures were observed. “ Selinde, Ank & Frans Verbij, May 22nd, 2020
“Incidentally, the Corono cap specially developed by Birds4You is a godsend. This way everyone can still use the telescope.” Carolien, May 27th, 2020
“And with the corona-safe cap on the telescope, we were able to see the birds up close. Highly recommended.” Margreet & Levien, June 19th, 2020
The Corona cap is a cap that can be easily slipped over the eyepiece (the part you are looking through) of the telescope. This prevents contact infections with Corona (Covid 19) when several people use the same telescope (Spotting Scope) in quick succession.
After all, Corona can be transmitted through the eye. You can also become infected through tear fluid or small drops of saliva on the eyepiece (by breathing!).
By using a Corona cap, it is no longer necessary to clean / disinfect the eyepiece between users. This allows users to use the telescope in quick succession. This is very handy since birds tend to fly away, and it is a pity if you just miss that nice bird because the telescope has to be cleaned. The eyepiece of a telescope is equipped with multiple lenses, these lenses are provided by the manufacturer with very thin layers on the glass (coatings). These layers ensure that the lens repels dust and water, for example, but also that the color reproduction is better for the telescope. These coatings cannot withstand constant cleaning with potentially aggressive agents, which is necessary when changing users. Also, each eyepiece is equipped with a rubber eyecup for comfort. This too cannot withstand constant cleaning. The plasticizers go out of this rubber and it will stick. A new zoom eyepiece for a Swarovski AT telescope, for example, costs at least € 500, so it is a costly affair.
For which telescopes is there a corona cap?
At the moment the corona cap is available for the: Swarovski ATS and STS telescope, with a zoom eyepiece. The cap is available for the following 2 eyepiece types:
- Zoom oculair 20 – 60;
- Zoom oculair 25 – 50;
Swarovski ATX / STX and BTX
Kowa TSN770 / 880 and TP-556 with the zoom eyepiece below:
- Oculair 25-60x TE11WZ
Do you have a Kowa or Swarovski ATS or STS telescope with a different eyepiece? Please contact us via the contact form, there is probably also a suitable cap for your telescope. Otherwise we will look together at the possibilities to make a suitable cap!
My telescope is not listed, what to do now?
Please contact us via the contact form, there is probably also a suitable corona cap for your telescope!
I don’t have a telescope, what’s the use of this cap?
Do you not have a telescope yourself, but do you use someone else’s, or are you going on an excursion? Then you can now easily bring your cap, such a safe idea! Would you like to book an excursion at Birds4You.nl? Then there is of course a cap available for you during the excursion, so you don’t have to do anything.
Why 3 types of caps?
I had 3 types developed because there are different wishes when using the telescope. Below is the explanation for the different types.
Glasses wearers cap
This is the shortest cap, it fits best when the eyepiece ring for spectacle wearers is screwed in. The Zoom function of the eyepiece remains available. When the eyepiece ring is turned out, this cap wobbles slightly.
Standard cap
This is slightly longer and can be used by both spectacle wearers and non-spectacle wearers. The zoom function is available in both cases. However, it covers the zoom function slightly if this cap is used by a spectacle wearer. It does not wobble on the eyepiece when used by a non-spectacle wearer.
No Zoom cap
This is the longest of all, it covers the zoom function even for non-spectacle wearers. This is useful if you don’t want another user to be able to operate the zoom. This prevents contact contamination on the zoom part of the telescope.
Colors of the cap
The cap is available in multiple colors, this allows you to give users their colored cap, so you prevent caps from being changed. Other colors can be supplied on request at an additional cost. Please contact us via the contact form.
What is the Corona cap made of?
The cap is made of biodegradable plastic. This means that the cap will eventually break down under the influence of moisture and UV light. The cap should not be left outdoors when not in use and should dry well after possible cleaning. Why do I make the cap from biodegradable plastic? In this way, we prevent more unbreakable plastic from getting into nature should a cap be lost when birdwatching. It is not the intention to leave the cap in nature after the Corona period! Also breaking off this cap takes time. Finally throw the cap with the rest. A disadvantage of biodegradable plastic is that it cannot be recycled, and decomposition via green waste takes too long.
From idea to cap
Only incorrectly produced corona caps can be returned in consultation. Each cap is by its nature an individual product.
